Tales of the Darkness #1 (1998) kicks off with a high-stakes infiltration as Sela and Fincher board the colossal, living vessel of the cosmic entity known as the Darkness, posing as smugglers. Written by Brian Haberlin and Malachy Coney and illustrated by Whilce Portacio with inks by Gerry Alanguilan and Gilbert Monsanto, the issue blends eerie atmosphere and personal tension as Sela navigates luxury and deception aboard the ship, haunted by the memory of her mother’s fate at the Darkness’s hands. The cover, penciled by Portacio and inked by Alanguilan, captures the eerie grandeur of the living vessel, setting the tone for a story where trust is a weapon and loyalty is a question.

Sela and Fincher use the ploy of interspace smuggling to get on board the Darkness' giant living ship. Sela reports to her commanders that things are going according to plan but she does not plan on growing close to the dark ruler of the cosmos. As the Darkness cozies up to Sela, she is given every luxury but still holds the memory of her mother who died at the hands of the Darkness.
