Superman #707
In "Grounded Part Five," Superman walks across America, drawn to Des Moines and then back to his roots in Kansas, where Lois Lane investigates a chemical plant poisoning the local environment. When the plant explodes, Superman rushes in to contain the fire and stabilize the situation, only to be swayed by the workers’ plea that shutting it down would cost too many jobs—leading him to quietly stop Lois from exposing the truth. The moment leaves her stunned and walking away, as Superman grapples with the weight of his choices. Written by J. Michael Straczynski and Chris Roberson, with art by Allan Goldman and Eber Ferreira, and colored by Marcelo Maiolo, the issue’s cover by John Cassaday captures the gravity of this pivotal journey.

Superman continues walking across the country, visiting Des Moines, Iowa, and then Kansas, where Lois is investigating charges that a chemical plant is poisoning the local ecosystem, when the plant explodes. Superman stops the fire and stabilizes the plant. He confirms the problem, but the workers convince him that the plant would have to be shut down because of the compliance cost, and they need the jobs. They even convince him to stop Lois from running the story. Lois can't believe it and leaves.
