“The Last Five Hundred”

From June 1987, this issue of John Byrne and Karl Kesel's Superman run presents a cover that puts the Man of Steel in immediate, overwhelming danger. Superman strains against a massive white robotic figure whose enormous fist crashes into him in a burst of energy, while a crowd of blue-skinned alien beings looks on with hostile intent and the speech bubbles "Destroy Him!" and "Destroy Superman!" leave no doubt about the mood — even a dark-haired woman in blue in the corner adds her voice to the call. It's a wonderfully tense image, penciled and inked by Byrne himself, that sets the stage perfectly for a story titled "The Last Five Hundred.
