Supergirl #3
The cover of Supergirl #3 (December 2005) makes a striking first impression: Kara stands with her back to us, red cape billowing against a stormy sky, glancing over her shoulder with eyes blazing a fierce, unsettling crimson. The tagline "…An Outsider?" hangs in the air alongside that smoldering gaze, hinting at questions of identity and belonging that run through "Power Chapter Three: Outsiders." Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund's cover work gives the figure a moody, cinematic weight that makes this third chapter of Jeph Loeb's run feel like a genuine turning point for the Girl of Steel.

Supergirl and the Outsiders spar at their headquarters, when Nightwing intervenes. Supergirl impulsively kisses Nightwing, and then rushes off to find Luthor, sabotaging the Outsider's jet so that they can't follow. Starfire follows anyhow, but is zapped by Luthor, wearing his armor. He proceeds to use a variety of Kryptonite rays on Supergirl, ultimately using a black kryptonite ray. That releases a Kryptonian-spouting dark Supergirl, who warns Luthor that he’s just made the biggest mistake of what's left of his life.
