When Captain Adam, a U.S.A.F. test-pilot and rocket expert, boards the experimental X-49 spacecraft alongside Major Silberling, he discovers a critical flaw in the oxygen supply pump that could prove fatal at the plane's target speed of 18,000 miles per hour.
