“The Boy Without Fear, Chapter 5: Bonus Level”
About this Issue

Spider-Boy #16 serves as the climax of the five-part 'The Boy Without Fear' arc, bringing together the Jade Dragon tournament storyline that redefined Bailey Briggs's place in the Marvel Universe — no longer just Spider-Man's sidekick, but a hero navigating Daredevil's world of assassins and shadow organizations. The issue delivers the payoff to the long-building Spider-Girl (Makawalu Akana) and Bullseye conspiracy that began in #12, and marks what collector sources flag as the first full appearance of the Gaping Maw's operative known as Demon's Mist, adding another original villain to Spider-Boy's personal rogues gallery. As the concluding chapter of a self-contained arc subsequently collected in trade, the issue also represents one of the last major story beats Dan Slott wrote before departing Marvel — giving the 'Boy Without Fear' storyline a sense of finality within the broader twenty-issue run.

History

Spider-Boy #16 was produced by the same core team responsible for the entire solo series: writer Dan Slott and penciller/inker Paco Medina, with colors by Erick Arciniega and letters by VC Joe Caramagna, under editor Nick Lowe and associate editor Tom Groneman. The 'Boy Without Fear' arc was conceived as a deliberate status-quo shift for Bailey Briggs, pairing him with Daredevil rather than Spider-Man and introducing the all-new Spider-Girl (revealed to be Makawalu Akana, a.k.a. Funhouse) beginning in #12 — a character whose costume was designed by Michael Cho. The series ran exactly twenty issues before Slott's departure from Marvel in 2025 to work for DC Comics brought the run to a planned close.
