About this Issue

Spider-Boy #4 is the first full appearance and origin issue of Boy-Spider — the monstrous clone Madame Monstrosity assembles from the biological leftovers of Bailey Briggs's original transformation — making it a pivotal early chapter in the Spider-Boy mythos. The issue also delivers the series' most emotionally charged revelation to date: Madame Monstrosity deduces from Bailey's DNA that his captive cat-Humanimal, Tabby, is in fact his mother, Tabitha Briggs, reshaping the entire arc's stakes from a monster-of-the-week adventure into a family tragedy. Its dual-story structure — a rare instance where a backup tale directly parallels and enriches the lead story in real time — exemplifies Dan Slott's approach to using the anthology format purposefully rather than as filler. As the issue that locks in the emotional and antagonistic engine driving the series' first seven-issue arc, it stands as one of the most narratively dense early entries in this short-lived but well-regarded solo run.

History

Spider-Boy as a series grew directly out of the 'End of the Spider-Verse' storyline, in which Dan Slott — who conceived Bailey Briggs partly as a riff on the idea of a forgotten sidekick nobody remembers — introduced the character alongside artist Humberto Ramos in Spider-Man vol. 4 #7 (April 2023). By the time the solo ongoing launched in November 2023, Paco Medina had become the primary series artist, with Ty Templeton contributing backup stories and Erick Arciniega and Dee Cunniffe sharing coloring duties throughout. Issue #4, titled 'Nightmare Scenario' and cover-dated April 2024, was edited by Elizabeth Pyle under Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski, and its letters were handled by VC's Joe Caramagna.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First full appearance and origin of Boy-Spider (Boyd Briggs), the monstrous arachnid clone Madame Monstrosity creates from the biological byproducts of Bailey's original DNA-splicing procedure.
  • The issue reveals that Madame Monstrosity (Dr. Melodia Stillwell) had no memory of creating Spider-Boy because Bailey was erased from the Web of Life during 'End of the Spider-Verse,' forcing her to reconstruct his origin from archived genetic material.
  • Key story revelation: Madame Monstrosity identifies Tabby — her cat-Humanimal companion — as Tabitha Briggs, Bailey's mother, by cross-referencing the DNA in Bailey's old storage samples, setting up a major emotional thread for the arc.
  • Miles Morales (Spider-Man of Earth-1610) appears as a guest-star, mistakenly hunting Boy-Spider as a rogue version of Bailey, bringing together Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Bailey Briggs in the same story for the first time in this series.
  • The issue features two stories: the main 'Nightmare Scenario' by Dan Slott and Paco Medina, and a backup titled 'Missing Pieces' by Ty Templeton, which shows Boy-Spider's creation from Madame Monstrosity's perspective in parallel with the main plot — an unusually integrated use of the anthology format.
  • Written by Dan Slott; pencils by Paco Medina (main) and Ty Templeton (backup); colors by Erick Arciniega (main) and Dee Cunniffe (backup); letters by VC's Joe Caramagna; cover by Humberto Ramos and Edgar Delgado.
  • Released February 21, 2024 (cover-dated April 2024); 25 story pages; rated T+; part of the series' opening Madame Monstrosity arc spanning issues #1–7.
  • Madame Monstrosity's full name, Dr. Melodia Stillwell, connects her retroactively to the Stillwell family of Marvel mad scientists — Farley Stillwell (creator of the Scorpion) and Harlan Stillwell (creator of the Human Fly) — with the series establishing her as their mother.
