About this Issue

Spider-Boy #15 serves as the climactic finale of the 'Tournament of the Open Maw,' the third major story arc in Dan Slott's solo series for Bailey Briggs, and the issue that delivers the first (flashback) appearance of Funhouse — the villainous alter ego of Spider-Girl, Makawalu Akana — a notable addition to the young hero's emerging rogues gallery. The arc itself is a creative high-water mark for the title, positioning a ten-year-old kid at the center of a deadly assassin tournament alongside Daredevil and against Bullseye, which underscores the series' signature tonal tension between superhero whimsy and genuine stakes. By resolving the power struggle over the Gaping Maw's leadership, the issue closes out one of the title's most Daredevil-inflected chapters and sets the table for the next phase of Bailey's world. The issue also reinforces the depth of the series' supporting cast, with Bengal, Tigriss, Hulkette, Boy-Spider, and the Briggs family all woven into the conclusion.

History

Spider-Boy #15 was produced by the same core team — writer Dan Slott and artist Paco Medina — who launched the series in November 2023 as a spinoff from Slott and Mark Bagley's Spider-Man run. The 'Tournament of the Open Maw' arc running through issues #11–15 marked the creative team's deepest dive into the Daredevil corner of the Marvel Universe, pairing Bailey Briggs with Matt Murdock and his world of assassins. The issue was later collected, along with issues #11–16, in the Spider-Boy Vol. 3: The Dragon's Challenge trade paperback, published by Marvel/Penguin Random House in July 2025.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Dan Slott with interior art by Paco Medina (and Humberto Ramos per some source listings); cover by Paco Medina. Released January 29, 2025, with a March 2025 cover date.
  • Concludes the 'Tournament of the Open Maw' story arc, in which Spider-Boy and Daredevil face Spider-Girl and Bullseye for control of the Gaping Maw assassin organization.
  • Contains what Key Collector Comics identifies as the first appearance of Funhouse — the alter ego of Spider-Girl (Makawalu 'Maka' Akana); the Marvel Fandom wiki specifies this appearance occurs in flashback rather than the main narrative.
  • Features supporting appearances by Bengal (Duc No Tranh) and Tigriss (Minh Tranh), two characters with deep ties to the Daredevil corner of the Marvel Universe.
  • Hulkette, Boy-Spider (Boyd Briggs), and Tabitha Briggs also appear, continuing the development of the series' expanding cast.
  • Spider-Girl's full name, Makawalu Akana, had been revealed in the preceding issue (#13/'The Secret Origin of Spider-Girl'), making this issue the payoff to that origin arc.
  • Collected in Spider-Boy Vol. 3: The Dragon's Challenge TPB (issues #11–16), published July 2025 by Marvel/Penguin Random House.
  • The issue shipped with five variant covers, including versions by Javier Garrón, Kaare Andrews, Mike McKone (Fantastic Four homage), Mirka Andolfo (Madame Web), and Todd Nauck (Iconic variant).
