Sonic Universe #38
Sonic Universe #38 occupies a quietly pivotal position in the pre-reboot Archie Sonic continuity as the final appearance of Hope Kintobor — a supporting character whose exit quietly closed the door on a chapter of the Eggman family drama that would never be revisited after the 2013 continuity reset. The issue is equally notable for being the first Archie Sonic story to place E-123 Omega at the center of a full-scale battle entirely without his Team Dark partners, testing whether the character could carry dramatic weight on his own. Writer Ian Flynn also used this installment to quietly retcon a long-standing continuity error: for the first time in print, it was confirmed that Hope and Snively are half-siblings by blood rather than step-siblings as previously stated, resolving a years-old internal contradiction. The issue also holds a structural distinction as the first Archie Sonic comic to feature essentially no Mobian characters whatsoever — grounding its entire cast in the human and robotic side of the universe in a way that was unprecedented for the line.

The issue is the second chapter of the four-part 'Scrambled' arc (Sonic Universe #37–40), written by series regular Ian Flynn and penciled by Jamal Peppers — making 'Scrambled' the first Sonic Universe story arc not drawn by Tracy Yardley, who had handled pencils throughout the series' earlier run. Jim Amash provided inks, Jack Morelli lettering, and Steve Downer colors; the issue also marked cover colorist Matt Herms's confirmed final contribution to the Sonic Universe title in that capacity, with Downer stepping into the cover-color role thereafter. The arc was published at a creatively ambitious period for the Archie Sonic line, when Ian Flynn was systematically incorporating game-derived characters such as Orbot and Cubot into the pre-existing continuity.
