Sonic Universe #63
Sonic Universe #63 marks the opening chapter of 'The Great Chaos Caper,' the second leg of the post-reboot 'Dark Trilogy' of arcs, and serves as the Sonic Universe line's earliest extended exploration of Knuckles the Echidna inside the Post-Super Genesis Wave continuity — the rebooted timeline that emerged after the Ken Penders copyright dispute forced Archie Comics to restructure its entire Sonic universe. The issue is the first appearance of Relic the Pika, a brand-new original character created for this continuity who filled the narrative support role previously held by characters that had to be retired due to the legal fallout. It also delivers the Sonic Universe debut of the rebooted Chaotix as a detective agency — firmly aligning the comic's characterizations with the SEGA game canon for the first time — and establishes on-panel the 'zero hour' ground truth of the Shattered World Crisis from Knuckles' perspective, a story thread that would drive the Archie Sonic line until its 2017 cancellation.

Written by Ian Flynn and illustrated by Tracy Yardley (pencils), with Jim Amash on inks and Matt Herms on colors, the issue was published in April 2014 and solicited through Previews under order code FEB140944. It carried a standard cover by Yardley and a chibi variant by Ryan Jampole. Early preview materials incorrectly titled the arc 'The Great Chaotix Caper,' a typo that was caught and corrected before the final covers went to print. The arc and this debut chapter exist in direct response to the post-Penders editorial realignment: the Chaotix's rich pre-reboot supporting cast — including characters like Julie-Su that Penders had claimed copyright over — was stripped away, and Flynn rebuilt Knuckles' world around new, unencumbered creations like Relic and her Gizoid assistant Fixit.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Relic the Pika, an archaeologist and original Archie Comics character created for the Post-Super Genesis Wave continuity, who resides on Angel Island and serves as a support figure for Knuckles.
- First appearance of Fixit, Relic's Gizoid-modeled robot assistant, also introduced in this issue.
- Opening chapter of 'The Great Chaos Caper' arc (issues #63–66), the second story arc in the 'Dark Trilogy' that spans Sonic Universe #59–70.
- Story title: 'The Great Chaos Caper – Part One: On the Hunt'; published April 2014 by Archie Comics.
- Creative team: writer Ian Flynn, penciler Tracy Yardley, inker Jim Amash, colorist Matt Herms; chibi variant cover by Ryan Jampole.
- The issue presents the reboot's first sustained look at Knuckles' post-Genesis Wave status: he is once again the last surviving echidna, Chaos is sealed in the Master Emerald as in the SEGA games (not the Ancient Onyx as in the old continuity), and the Chaotix are now a detective agency consistent with their game portrayal.
- The Dark Gaia Minions — creatures that rise from the fractured earth after sundown — make their Sonic Universe comic debut in this issue, introduced as recurring antagonists during the Shattered World Crisis.
- Content from this issue was later reprinted in Sonic Super Digest #10 (December 2014), giving the arc broader newsstand-adjacent distribution.
