In a flashback story, on the day Jimmy first arrives in Metropolis he agrees to be the test subject for a time vehicle that sends him to Krypton's past, where he meets Jor-El and Lara and becomes Kal-El's baby-sitter. He protects the family from the Science Police and allows Kal-El's rocket to be launched. Upon his return to the Metropolis, Jimmy loses all recollection of his trip. But Superman, with his perfect memory, remembers Jimmy and when they meet again, Superman tells Jimmy that he has lined up a job as cub reporter for the Daily Planet for him, and presents him with the signal watch.
