“La carga de Chelo”
About this Collection

This volume collects the first part of the acclaimed Palomar series, originally published in the 1980s by Spanish cartoonist Miguelanxo Prado. Set in a fictional coastal village, the stories blend magical realism with everyday life, following a cast of richly drawn characters. This edition brings together the early chapters of the saga, showcasing Prado's distinctive watercolor art and narrative depth.

In "La carga de Chelo," Gilbert Hernandez and Lorenzo Diaz deliver a quietly devastating story set in the layered world of Palomar, where life and loss unfold with quiet inevitability. When Tipin' Tipin' awakens from a prolonged sleep under his former home, Carmen takes him in, setting off a chain of small, intimate reckonings—among friends, lovers, and strangers. With Gilbert Hernandez handling both art and inks, and Iris Bernárdez’s crisp lettering anchoring the rhythm, the issue unfolds with the steady hand of a master storyteller, the cover by Hernandez capturing the mood in its stark, expressive lines.

Luba, a newcomer to Palomar, quickly attracts many customers to her bañadora business, to Chelo's bemused surprise.
