“X-Manhunt, Chapter 2: Charles”
About this Issue

NYX #9 serves as the penultimate chapter of the series and simultaneously carries the weight of being Part Two of the eight-issue 'X-Manhunt' crossover event — the first major line-wide X-Men crossover of the post-Krakoan 'From the Ashes' era — making it one of the most structurally loaded issues Kelly and Lanzing produced. The issue brings Professor X into the NYX cast for the first time in the series' run, forcing a direct reckoning between his legacy and the grassroots mutant community the young heroes have been building in New York City. It also stages Mojo's endgame against that community, using a Krakoan Seed and the Treehouse's hidden Cerebro helmet as plot pivots that ripple outward into the broader X-line. Critics singled it out as a case study in how a creative team can absorb an editorially mandated crossover without destroying the thematic DNA of their own book.

History

NYX vol. 2 was announced by Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and VP/Executive Editor Tom Brevoort at SXSW in March 2024 as part of the 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative, which relaunched the entire X-Men line following the end of the Krakoan Age. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing — who work together under the 'Hivemind' banner — cited the original NYX series, Runaways, and Young Avengers as touchstones, and framed the book as one of the few 'From the Ashes' titles explicitly designed to interrogate, rather than simply move past, the Krakoan legacy. Issue #9 was produced by the same core team (Kelly, Lanzing, artist Francesco Mortarino, colorist Raúl Angulo, and letterer VC's Joe Sabino) that handled the majority of the run; editor Annalise Bissa rounded out the unit. Between issues #8 and #9, the writing duo publicly confirmed the series would conclude with issue #10, meaning the penultimate chapter was composed with full knowledge of the ending.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Released March 5, 2025; cover-dated May 2025. Written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, art by Francesco Mortarino, colors by Raúl Angulo, letters by VC's Joe Sabino, edited by Annalise Bissa.
  • Designated 'X-Manhunt' Part Two — the second chapter of the eight-part crossover spanning Uncanny X-Men, NYX, Storm, X-Men, X-Factor, X-Force, and Exceptional X-Men, all published in March 2025.
  • First appearance of Professor X (Charles Xavier) within the NYX vol. 2 series; his arrival on the run in New York forces the team to contend with a mentor whose manipulative history is deeply at odds with the community they have built.
  • Key plot revelation: Xavier secretly retrieves a Cerebro helmet hidden inside the Treehouse, and abandons Ms. Marvel and Anole to fight Mojo in order to obtain the final Krakoan Seed — a development that tracks directly through the broader X-Manhunt storyline.
  • Mojo's endgame is executed in this issue: using the NYX character Local as an unwitting conduit, he channels the Krakoan Seed's power in an attempt to transform New York City itself into 'Mojo City,' setting up the climax of the series.
  • Sobunar of the Depths — the Arakki omega-level mutant and former member of the Great Ring who had relocated to the post-Krakoan Morlock community beneath New York — appears in this issue as part of the NYX supporting cast. (Sobunar first joined the NYX series in issue #3, where he was established as a Morlock alongside Caliban.)
  • The issue also acknowledges the concurrent 'One World Under Doom' event, with Doctor Doom's regency over New York referenced in-story, though NYX #9 is not an official tie-in to that event.
  • The collected edition of the NYX vol. 2 second half, titled 'Mojo City,' collects issues #7–10; however, NYX #9's X-Manhunt chapter was notably omitted from the separately announced X-Manhunt trade paperback (ISBN 978-1302964771).
