NYX #9

History

NYX vol. 2 was announced by Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and VP/Executive Editor Tom Brevoort at SXSW in March 2024 as part of the 'X-Men: From the Ashes' initiative, which relaunched the entire X-Men line following the end of the Krakoan Age. Writers Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing — who work together under the 'Hivemind' banner — cited the original NYX series, Runaways, and Young Avengers as touchstones, and framed the book as one of the few 'From the Ashes' titles explicitly designed to interrogate, rather than simply move past, the Krakoan legacy. Issue #9 was produced by the same core team (Kelly, Lanzing, artist Francesco Mortarino, colorist Raúl Angulo, and letterer VC's Joe Sabino) that handled the majority of the run; editor Annalise Bissa rounded out the unit. Between issues #8 and #9, the writing duo publicly confirmed the series would conclude with issue #10, meaning the penultimate chapter was composed with full knowledge of the ending.

• Sobunar of the Depths — the Arakki omega-level mutant and former member of the Great Ring who had relocated to the post-Krakoan Morlock community beneath New York — appears in this issue as part of the NYX supporting cast. (Sobunar first joined the NYX series in issue #3, where he was established as a Morlock alongside Caliban.)
• The issue also acknowledges the concurrent 'One World Under Doom' event, with Doctor Doom's regency over New York referenced in-story, though NYX #9 is not an official tie-in to that event.
• The collected edition of the NYX vol. 2 second half, titled 'Mojo City,' collects issues #7–10; however, NYX #9's X-Manhunt chapter was notably omitted from the separately announced X-Manhunt trade paperback (ISBN 978-1302964771).
