“One Head Too Many!”

"Menace #1" (1953) delivers a chilling dose of early Marvel suspense with "One Head Too Many!"—a tense, atmospheric tale written by Stan Lee and brought to life by Russ Heath’s sharp art and inks. The story follows a sadistic warden after a gas chamber execution, as he’s cornered by a furious mob of inmates, forced to choose between lingering poison and violent retribution. Bill Everett’s cover captures the dread perfectly, with the warden’s panicked face framed by the shadowed chamber door.

After an execution in the gas chamber, a sadistic warden faces a revolt by the inmates and attempts to flee downstairs. The inmates pursue him and, as the story ends, the warden realizes he has a choice between two dooms; the poisonous fumes still lingering in the execution chamber or being torn to shreds by the maddened inmates.
