About this Issue

Marvel Two-in-One #4 is the narrative bridge that rescued the original Guardians of the Galaxy from a half-decade of publishing limbo, establishing the 31st-century Badoon-occupied Earth that had been dormant since Marvel Super-Heroes #18 (January 1969) and setting the stage for the team's second-ever appearance in issue #5. It marks the first appearances of Tarin — who goes on to become President of Earth in the original Guardians continuity — as well as Annie Christopher, the Monster of Badoon, and the Zom soldiers, seeding a corner of Marvel's future-history that writer Steve Gerber would develop across Defenders and a dedicated Guardians series. The issue also closes the book on the Wundarr-as-ward subplot that had threaded through the series' opening issues, handing the child-like alien off to Namorita in a tidy bit of Bronze Age housekeeping that freed the title for more varied team-ups going forward.

In "Doomsday 3014!", the Thing takes the curious alien Wundarr to the zoo, only to find the child-like extraterrestrial accidentally unleashing chaos by freeing the animals. With Steve and Sharon enjoying a quiet day, the unexpected mayhem brings Cap and Namorita to the scene—just as the trio is pulled into a startling revelation: a woman from the distant future, Tarin, arrives with a dire warning about Earth’s subjugation by the Badoon. Written by Steve Gerber and brought to life by Sal Buscema’s dynamic art, with inks by F. Giacoia and colors by P. Goldberg, this 1974 adventure kicks off with a thrilling time-jump and a mission to save humanity. The cover, by Gil Kane and Joe Sinnott, captures the moment of shock and wonder as the future collides with the present.

Steve Gerber wrote the full opening run of Marvel Two-in-One (#1–9), weaving it tightly into his concurrent work on Man-Thing, Sub-Mariner, and what would become his Guardians of the Galaxy/Defenders storylines — a rare instance of one writer threading multiple Marvel titles into a coherent ongoing narrative. Issue #4 was edited by Roy Thomas under editor-in-chief Len Wein, with Sal Buscema on interiors and Gil Kane supplying the cover pencils over Joe Sinnott inks, a pairing consistent with the book's early production rhythm. Gerber has been credited, including by the Longbox Graveyard and CBR community discussions, as the primary creative force behind the decision to revive the forgotten Guardians, pulling them from the one-shot obscurity of Marvel Super-Heroes #18 into a multi-title arc.
