Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890, in Providence, Rhode Island, and died there on March 15, 1937. Though he never earned a living from his writing during his lifetime, he is now recognized as a foundational figure in weird fiction, best known for creating the Cthulhu Mythos and inspiring the term "Lovecraftian horror." After his father was institutionalized in 1893, Lovecraft lived comfortably until his grandfather's death reduced the family's wealth. He later lived with his mother until she too was institutionalized in 1919. Lovecraft began writing essays for the United Amateur Press Association, and a 1913 critical letter to a pulp magazine led to his entry into pulp fiction. He became a central figure in the "Lovecraft Circle," a group of writers who introduced him to *Weird Tales*, his most prominent publisher. A brief marriage to Sonia Greene and a move to New York City in 1924 took a toll on his mental and financial health. Returning to Providence in 1926, he produced his most celebrated works, including *The Call of Cthulhu*, *At the Mountains of Madness*, *The Shadow over Innsmouth*, and *The Shadow Out of Time*. His fiction is rooted in cosmicism, a philosophy emphasizing humanity's insignificance, and often explores civilizational decline. Lovecraft's early conservative and racist views later shifted toward socialism, though he remained elitist. Posthumously, his work has been adapted into comics, films, and anthologies, cementing his legacy as a master of cosmic horror.
