“7: The New Guy, The Concrete Jungle 1 of 2”

Dynamite's 2012 series transplants Edgar Rice Burroughs' feral hero into unexpectedly gritty territory, and this seventh issue — "The Concrete Jungle, Part 1 of 2" — signals a sharp turn in tone. Lucio Parrillo's cover puts the shirtless, blade-wielding Lord of the Jungle at the top of the frame, driving a knife downward into a pale, bloodied attacker while a second ghoulish figure lunges from below and shadowy threats close in from the misty background. It's a visceral, atmospheric image that makes a strong case for picking up what looks to be one of the series' more intense chapters.
