In "First Date," Richie tries his best to impress his new girlfriend Gloria, showering her with every flower from the florist shop and then overwhelming her the next day with mountains of candy and dolls. When Gloria’s father grows uneasy about the growing pile of gifts—especially after hearing Gloria say Richie likes pets too—she tries to reassure him that Richie’s giving only one pet, but even that promise can’t stop the chaos from spiraling.

By May 1958 the Little Dot series — launched in September 1953 and drawn largely by Steve Muffatti — was well into its stride as Harvey's primary launchpad for new characters, having already introduced Richie Rich and Little Lotta as back-page features in its first issue. Issue #33 was produced by the series' core creative team of interior artists Steve Muffatti and Warren Kremer, with Kremer also providing the cover, reflecting the standard Harvey production model of the era in which Kremer served as the line's art director and principal cover designer. The deliberate timing of Gloria Glad's debut — arriving five years into Richie Rich's existence as a backup character but two full years before he earned his own solo title — suggests Harvey's editors were actively building out Richie's supporting world in preparation for his eventual solo launch.
