This August 1995 issue of Legion of Super-Heroes opens with a cover by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer that radiates genuine dread — crowds of terrified civilians flee in every direction as a devastating energy beam tears through a futuristic cityscape, setting buildings ablaze and sending debris flying in all directions. Looming large above the chaos, a montage of screaming faces drives home the scale of the catastrophe, making "Heaven and Hell" feel like an event with real stakes for the 30th century's greatest heroes. With Waid, Peyer, and McCraw sharing writing duties alongside artist Lee Moder, this is a strong entry in the run that's hard to put down.
