Three intense Legionnaires — all bearing unsettling red-glowing eyes — crowd the foreground of this December 1999 issue, their expressions grim and their purple costumes suggesting something has gone deeply wrong. Behind them looms a massive shadowy creature with a single burning red eye, its dark, writhing form threatening to swallow everything in its path. Penciled by Olivier Coipel and inked by Andy Lanning, this opener to "Legion of the Damned" promises a darker turn for DC's future heroes that's hard to look away from.
