Justice League of America #11
From 1962 comes this wonderfully tense issue of Justice League of America, with a cover by Mike Sekowsky and Murphy Anderson that lays the stakes out with alarming clarity: a towering pink-skinned alien villain already holds a flask containing Green Arrow — reduced to miniature size — while labeled flasks on the shelf behind him reveal that Superman, Batman, and J'onn J'onzz have already met the same fate. Standing defiantly before the gloating conqueror are The Flash, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern — the last heroes still free as the villain boasts he'll imprison the entire League and begin his one-hour conquest of Earth. Gardner Fox's story title, "One Hour to Doomsday!," promises exactly the kind of high-concept, against-the-clock adventure that made early Justice League comics such a thrill.
