Journey into Mystery Annual #1
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeJourney into Mystery Annual #1 is the true first appearance of Hercules (and Zeus) in the continuity of the Marvel Universe, establishing the Greek and Roman Olympian pantheon as a distinct, ongoing cosmic presence alongside the Norse Asgardians. The clash between Thor and Hercules — two mythological powerhouses written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby at the peak of their Silver Age collaboration — set a template for cross-pantheon rivalry and eventual brotherhood that would drive decades of storytelling. The annual also served as the formal launch pad for Hercules as a recurring Marvel hero: within months he was a regular guest in the newly renamed Mighty Thor, and by the late 1960s he had joined the Avengers. As the sole issue published under the Journey into Mystery Annual masthead before the title became Thor Annual, it occupies a unique structural position in the Thor publishing line.
In "When Titans Clash!", Thor finds himself unexpectedly pulled into a clash between two legendary warriors—Hercules and a storm giant—after a battle at the Asgardian gateway to Olympus. The story unfolds as Thor and Hercules, both proud and fierce, face off in a clash of gods and might, only to be stopped by Zeus, who declares them worthy allies. A landmark tale from Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, with Kirby’s dynamic art and Sol Brodsky’s bold cover inks, this 1965 annual brings mythic scale to the Marvel Universe in a 25-cent adventure.
In "When Titans Clash!", Thor and Loki stumble upon a fierce clash between storm giants at the Asgardian gateway to Olympus. When Thor is swept into the realm of the Greek gods, he finds himself locked in a brutal duel with the legendary Hercules—neither willing to yield. Zeus eventually intervenes, recognizing their strength and resolve, and declares them worthy allies. With the passage sealed and Thor returned home, the two titans’ brief but fierce encounter leaves a lasting mark.
In "Trapped by Loki, the God of Mischief!", the mischievous Loki breaks free from Asgard to torment Thor on Earth, using his cunning to manipulate the thunder god into aiding his schemes. When Thor’s mind is freed by his human alter ego, Donald Blake, the hero finds a way to turn the trickster’s plans against him—before Loki’s latest scheme can spiral out of control.
In a 1965 tale from Journey into Mystery Annual #1, Dr. Blake—on a medical mission in India—unexpectedly becomes Thor when a mysterious force empowers him to defend against a Chinese invasion. When a Chinese scientist, driven by desperation and ambition, irradiates himself to match Thor’s power, the two clash in a battle that erupts in New York. The story unfolds with a pulse of Cold War tension, as the clash of ideologies and science turns deadly, leaving the fate of both men hanging in the aftermath.
In "The Demon Duplicators!" from Journey into Mystery Annual #1 (1965), Dr. Blake is coerced into aiding the villainous Dr. Zaxton when the scientist kidnaps Jane to force his cooperation. With a machine that can duplicate people—though not their magic—Thor faces off against a perfect copy of himself, while Zaxton’s own experiment spirals out of control.
In "Thor Battles... the Lava Man," Thor faces a fiery foe born of Loki’s schemes—a Lava Man who claims Earth’s dry lands for his subterranean people. With Odin’s decree forbidding his love for Jane Foster now driving her away from her duties as Dr. Blake’s nurse, Thor must confront both the rampaging creature and the growing rift in his heart.

The issue was written by Stan Lee and penciled by Jack Kirby, with inks on the lead story by Vince Colletta and lettering by Sam Rosen; it was published in 1965 with a cover date of October, going on sale in July of that year. The cover, itself penciled by Kirby with inks attributed to Sol Brodsky (per researcher Nick Caputo), assembles four vignette images drawn from the reprinted back-matter stories rather than staging a fresh composition. The bulk of the 76-page package was built around four reprint stories from Journey into Mystery #85, #93, #95, and #97, supplemented by a new Kirby two-page pin-up map of Asgard, making the issue a practical 'best-of' showcase for newer readers alongside the genuine new content. A British price-variant edition was also distributed contemporaneously.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Hercules (Alcaeus of Thebes) and Zeus in the modern Marvel Universe (Earth-616), created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in the lead story 'When Titans Clash!'
- First appearance of the Marvel Universe version of Olympus and the Olympian pantheon as an ongoing continuity fixture — though earlier, non-canonical versions of Olympian characters had appeared in prior Timely/Marvel comics.
- The Hercules appearance in Avengers #10 (1964) was later retroactively declared a fake/impostor in the Avengers Forever limited series (1998–1999), solidifying this annual as Hercules's canonical debut.
- The reprinted story from Journey into Mystery #85 (scripted by Larry Lieber from Stan Lee's plot, penciled by Kirby, inked by Dick Ayers) marks the first appearance of Asgard; Balder, Tyr, Odin, and Heimdall appear in early, cameo or visual-only forms inconsistent with their later designs.
- The reprinted Journey into Mystery #93 story — scripted by Robert Bernstein from Lee's plot, with Kirby/Ayers art — contains the origin and first appearance of the Radioactive Man (Chen Lu) and includes a cameo by Chairman Mao Zedong.
- The issue also reprints stories from Journey into Mystery #95 ('The Demon Duplicators,' featuring Jane Foster) and JIM #97 ('The Lava Man,' first appearance of Molto the Lava Man), plus a Kirby pin-up map of Asgard later reprinted in Marvel Treasury Edition #3 (1974).
- The lead story 'When Titans Clash!' was reprinted in Giant-Size Thor #1 (1975), Marvel Masterworks: The Mighty Thor vol. 3 (2004), Marvel Milestones: Venom & Hercules (2005), Essential Thor vol. 2 (2005, black and white), and The Mighty Thor Omnibus vol. 1 (2010).
- This was the only issue published as Journey into Mystery Annual; all subsequent Thor annuals appeared under the Thor Annual masthead. Hercules followed up his debut by becoming a regular guest in The Mighty Thor beginning with issue #126 (March 1966), and later joined the Avengers. He made his MCU debut in Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), played by Brett Goldstein.
