“It's Waiting for Me!”

In *Journey into Mystery* #43 (1957), a man and his dog are haunted by a shared nightmare—a shadowy presence lurking just beyond a bend in the road. Written by Jack Oleck and illustrated by Jay Scott Pike, with coloring by Stan Goldberg, the story unfolds with quiet dread as the dog’s nightly cries strain the marriage, leading to a heartbreaking separation. When the man finally confronts the source of his fear, he discovers the dog fought it—battered and bloodied, it claws at his door, forcing a reckoning with his wife. The cover, by Carl Burgos, captures the moment of suspense with eerie precision.
