“Those Who Vanish!”

In "Those Who Vanish!", a man haunted by a recurring nightmare of a lurking threat around a familiar bend in the road finds his fear made terrifyingly real when his dog, once dismissed as a nuisance, returns battered and bloodied—its desperate cries a warning. Jay Scott Pike’s expressive art brings the creeping dread to life, capturing both the dreamlike unease and the raw intensity of the dog’s final stand. The cover by Sol Brodsky and Carl Burgos adds a haunting touch to this 1974 British horror tale.

A man and his dog have a recurring nightmare in which some hostile presence is waiting for him just around a bend in the road. His wife dislikes the dog as its cries during the dreams disrupt her sleeping. She gives the dog away, and when the man finally encounters the hostile presence in the dreams, it has been attacked and killed. His dog, beaten and scratched, claws at his door. He realizes that the dog fought the creature and he puts his foot down with his wife that, after he gets the animal some vet care he stays, and she agrees.
