Inspired by Johnny’s courage, Swift Deer dons his father’s war bonnet and shirt, though the hat keeps slipping over his eyes. When a buffalo stampede threatens the boy, Johnny rushes to save him—only to see Swift Deer, with quick thinking and a sharp arrow, drive off the beasts. As Johnny watches, he quietly reflects on his own role as a schoolteacher who wears the guise of a legend.
In "Decoy at Canyon Pass," the Drygulch Gang sets a deadly trap using a fake Johnny Thunder to lure the real one, targeting schoolteacher John Tane—his secret identity—by chaining him to a slingshot-tree rigged to fling him to his death. With time running out and the rope tightening, Tane uses a clever trick with his eyeglasses to burn through the cord, sending him flying into the river below. Emerging with guns blazing, he reveals himself as the real Johnny Thunder, turning the tables on the gang with a defiant stand.
