“The Revenge of the Girl Chief”

In "The Revenge of the Girl Chief," Lt. Dan Foley finds his gear stolen by Leaping Bear, a Comanche who believes the items hold his strength and medicine. When Dan surrenders to uncover the truth, his gesture of trust backfires as it emboldens the Comanches to attack the fort. Forced to face Leaping Bear in unarmed combat, Dan proves his courage—and secures peace. Written by John Broome and illustrated by Howard Sherman, with a cover by Bob Brown, this gripping tale blends tension and cultural insight in a story where honor and misunderstanding collide.

Lt Dan Foley has lost his hat, saber, and boots - stolen. He tracks his own boot marks to find Leaping Bear, a Comanche, who stole the items to steal Dan's "strength and medicine". Dan surrenders to learn more, but his surrender, a sign of weakness, encourages the Comanches to raid the fort! Foley demands trial by combat and, unarmed, defeats Leaping Bear. "We shall not go to war." And Foley needn't worry about theft anymore.
