Lt Dan Foley has lost his hat, saber, and boots - stolen. He tracks his own boot marks to find Leaping Bear, a Comanche, who stole the items to steal Dan's "strength and medicine". Dan surrenders to learn more, but his surrender, a sign of weakness, encourages the Comanches to raid the fort! Foley demands trial by combat and, unarmed, defeats Leaping Bear. "We shall not go to war." And Foley needn't worry about theft anymore.
