About this Collection

This 2018 collection from Dark Horse reprints the ten-issue miniseries that serves as a prequel to the original Incognegro. Set in 1920s Harlem, it follows Zane Pinchback, a light-skinned Black journalist who passes as white to investigate a series of murders targeting the city's Black artists and intellectuals. The story explores themes of racial identity and the Harlem Renaissance, written by Mat Johnson with art by Warren Pleece.

"Chapter I: Soaked" kicks off Mat Johnson’s Incognegro: Renaissance with a tense, high-stakes confrontation in a world where truth is a dangerous commodity. As Bette uncovers the dark web behind Xavier’s death, alliances fracture and secrets surface—especially when Zane risks everything to expose the truth. Warren Pleece’s striking artwork and Clem Robins’ sharp lettering bring the story’s mounting tension to life, with Pleece also handling the cover.

Bette meets with Gray and he admits to her that he arranged Xavier's death with the help of Giddons, a policeman on the take. Gray threatens to have Bette killed but Zane steals back the manuscript while they speak, then rushes Bette to safety. Cornering Van Horn, Van Horn admits to them he put his name on Xavier's manuscript; when Xavier demanded Gray pay him instead of Van Horn, Gray refused, causing Xavier to start speaking publicly about the matter, resulting in Gray ordering his death. Zane prints the entire story in the Herald, leading to Gray and Giddons' arrests.
