Bette meets with Gray and he admits to her that he arranged Xavier's death with the help of Giddons, a policeman on the take. Gray threatens to have Bette killed but Zane steals back the manuscript while they speak, then rushes Bette to safety. Cornering Van Horn, Van Horn admits to them he put his name on Xavier's manuscript; when Xavier demanded Gray pay him instead of Van Horn, Gray refused, causing Xavier to start speaking publicly about the matter, resulting in Gray ordering his death. Zane prints the entire story in the Herald, leading to Gray and Giddons' arrests.
