“Torture”

Part of DC's 1997 "Genesis" crossover event, this issue promises intensity right from its cover — a gleefully menacing DeSaad looms large in his hood, wielding a weapon that fires a searing energy blast directly at a Green Lantern power ring on an outstretched, seemingly helpless hand. The tagline "The Torture Chamber of DeSaad!" leaves little doubt that Kyle Rayner's situation is dire, and Darryl Banks and Terry Austin deliver that threat with unsettling, wide-grinned menace. Ron Marz and the full creative team make this a compelling chapter in the series' run at a time when DC's cosmic mythology was front and center.
