About this Collection

This volume collects issues #0–#4 of the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero series by IDW, continuing the re-presentation of Larry Hama's original Marvel run in chronological order. It includes the classic storylines 'Operation: Lady Doomsday' and 'The Commander's Gambit,' featuring key characters like Snake Eyes, Scarlett, and Cobra Commander. The collection also features new cover art and bonus material from the original series.

"Beginnings... ...And Endings" delivers a tense, character-driven chapter in the G.I. Joe saga, with Larry Hama’s sharp storytelling bringing emotional weight to a mission gone wrong in Borovia. As Stalker, Snow Job, Outback, and Quick Kick face betrayal and loss, the cost of duty becomes painfully clear—especially when Outback is ordered to flee while the others hold the line. Marshall Rogers’ evocative art, enhanced by Danny Bulanadi’s inks and Bob Sharen’s colors, captures the grim atmosphere of a war where loyalty is tested and the line between survival and sacrifice blurs.

Stalker, Snow Job, Outback, and Quick Kick are sent into Borovia to rescue a newsman accused of spying for the U.S., and the attempt is failed when they learn he was released in a spy exchange. As they attempt their own escape, Outback is told by Stalker to escape as the others are wounded and Spigou (their contact) is dead, so their story can be relayed back. The Commander has decided to quit Cobra so he can give himself and Billy a better life and is shot by Fred as vengeance for all that Fred sacrificed to be part of Cobra. Hawk has sent word there will be no rescue for the Joes in Borovia.
