“Battle of Echo Canyon”

Based on the popular late-1950s TV western Boots and Saddles: The Story of the Fifth Cavalry, this Dell Four Color entry captures two determined men — one in frontier scout gear clutching a map, the other a uniformed cavalry officer with pistol drawn — huddled together by lamplight as the cover teases they're "Outnumbered!... at 'The Battle of Echo Canyon.'" The photo cover conveys real tension, with both figures peering intently into the darkness as if the enemy could be just around the next bend. Written by Paul S. Newman with lettering by John Duffy, it's a fine 1958 snapshot of Dell's knack for bringing beloved TV westerns straight to the comic page.
