Dell's "Movie Classic" line brought Hollywood epics to comic shops, and this 1958 adaptation of The Vikings makes an immediate impression with its striking cover photo layout. Dominating the foreground is a massive carved Viking dragon-prow, its interlocking knotwork rendered in dramatic detail, while a fur-cloaked warrior stands resolute behind it — with a smaller inset photo below showing a longship crowded with raiders cutting through the water. The tagline says it all: "Eric's dragon ships conquered an empire!" — a rousing promise backed by interior work from artist John Buscema and writer Leo Dorfman.
