When Sheriff Chance arrests Joe Burdette for murder, the Burdette gang bottles up the town of Rio Bravo and refuses to let anyone in who will help the Sheriff. Chance has to depend on a crippled deputy and a disgraced drunk to hold out and keep Joe Burdette in jail until the Marshal arrives. Matters are complicated by the arrival of a young gunslinger and a mysterious woman on the last stagecoach.
