“A Forest Ranger's Duties”

Published by Dell in 1959, this charming issue of Smokey the Bear Nature Stories features cover art by Morris Gollub depicting the beloved ranger bear in full action — wading across a rocky stream while cradling a snarling wild bear cub in his arms. In the background, a smaller Smokey figure watches alongside a raccoon near a forested shoreline, hinting at the wildlife caretaking spirit that runs through the title's "A Forest Ranger's Duties" story. It's a warm, lively snapshot of nature stewardship at a dime a copy.

Smokey, Little Smokey, and Specs the raccoon are out inspecting emergency fire stations in the forest when they come across an illegal trapline. Gimp, a villain bear, rolls a boulder toward Smokey, then plans on leaving in his truck with his poached animal skins. Smokey chases Gimp in his jeep. Gimp goes off the mountain road and the fiery crash starts a forest fire. Gimp helps fight the fire, but then escapes. Smokey chases him and the two have a showdown on a log in the river.
