In "Je ris du grand dieu Pan !", a man’s mockery of a painting of Pan at a museum takes a chilling turn when he glimpses something impossible in the museum guard’s shadow—cloven hooves—just as he and his date leave. The next day, his date finds him on the street, hairless and unexplained, as if the moment he looked back had marked him in ways he can’t name.
