Fantastic Four #1
Fantastic Four #1 (Éditions Héritage, 1968) marks the opening salvo of the only French-language superhero comic series published in Quebec during the Silver Age — a distinction the publisher held without competition from 1968 through the mid-1980s. Before Héritage launched, Francophone Canadians could only access American superhero comics in French through DC titles imported from Belgium; Marvel's universe was simply unavailable in their language. By inaugurating its Fantastic Four run, Héritage gave an entire generation of Quebec readers their first native-language entry point into the Lee-Kirby Marvel mythology, a cultural bridge that academic researchers have since identified as a defining act of Francophone publishing independence. Héritage was founded in April 1968 by Antoine Mireault, Norbert Mireault, and Maurice Poirier, who then sold the company to Payette & Payette later that same year as that firm was aggressively expanding. The new publisher secured French-translation rights to Marvel and DC titles and launched several series simultaneously, with Fantastic Four among its earliest flagship titles. Issues were produced in a larger-than-standard format (approximately 6.75 × 10.25 inches), printed in black and white, and typically ran 44 to 52 pages — often packaging two American issues into a single Héritage number. From 1971 onward, editorial production across all of Héritage's French comics was overseen by Robert St-Martin, whose name rarely appeared in the books themselves.
