Edge of Spider-Verse #1
Edge of Spider-Verse (2024) #1 carries on the anthology series tradition that stretches back to 2014's run — the same format that delivered Spider-Gwen to the world — and uses that platform to introduce Weapon VIII, a conceptually daring mash-up of the Spider-Man and Weapon Plus mythologies that had been teased by a single name-drop in New X-Men #145 (2003) but never realized. The issue simultaneously brings Spider-Byte back to her comics home turf after her 2023 animated-film breakthrough, completing a rare loop in which a print-to-screen character returns to the page with a substantially larger audience. A third concurrent story advances Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099 corner of the Spider-Verse and debuts the villain Travesty, signaling that this four-issue run was conceived as a coordinated narrative runway for the next major Spider-Versal event rather than a simple anthology of one-shots.

Marvel announced the 2024 Edge of Spider-Verse miniseries in October 2023, positioning it as the opening act of a larger Spider-Verse event. The debut issue paired the writing team of Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with artist Travel Foreman for the Weapon VIII story, while Nilah Magruder — the character's original co-creator — returned to Spider-Byte alongside artist Eric Gapstur, and writer Alex Segura teamed with veteran artist Salvador Larroca for the Miguel O'Hara framing story. Editor Nick Lowe oversaw all three stories, and the main cover was provided by Chad Hardin, with a wide array of retailer-exclusive and ratio variant covers produced for the issue's February 21, 2024 on-sale date.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Weapon VIII (Peter Parker of an alternate Earth), created by writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly with artist Travel Foreman — a character who merges Spider-Man and Weapon Plus mythology; the name 'Weapon VIII' had only appeared once before, in New X-Men #145 (2003), with no identity attached.
- Weapon VIII is revealed to be a version of Peter Parker whose spider-powers were grafted onto him by the same Department H / Weapon Plus program responsible for Wolverine (Weapon X); in the story he defeats and kills that Earth's Steve Rogers / Captain America (also a first and final appearance).
- First appearance of Travesty (Sergeant Rico Estevez), the villain of the Miguel O'Hara / Spider-Man 2099 story written by Alex Segura with art by Salvador Larroca; Madame Web (Julia Carpenter) also appears in that story.
- Spider-Byte (Margo Kess, Earth-22191) returns to comics for the first time since her original 2018 debut — she was created by Nilah Magruder (who also writes this return story) and first appeared in Vault of Spiders #1 (October 2018).
- Spider-Byte's profile had grown dramatically between her print debut and this issue due to her appearance — as the same Earth-22191 character — in the 2023 Sony animated film Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, voiced by Amandla Stenberg; Margo's last name 'Kess' was created by Magruder specifically for the film.
- The issue is a 40-page anthology collecting three distinct stories, all edited by Nick Lowe, on sale February 21, 2024 as the first chapter of a four-issue limited series.
- The issue received a second printing, and launched with an unusually large number of variant covers including retailer exclusives by artists such as Derrick Chew, Amanda Conner, Mahmud Asrar (foil), David Nakayama, and Skottie Young.
- The Edge of Spider-Verse anthology format has a precedent as a franchise launchpad: the original 2014 series introduced Spider-Gwen in that series' #2, and later volumes debuted characters including Spider-Rex and Web-Weaver; the 2024 series explicitly positioned itself as a setup for the next major Spider-Verse event.
