Edge of Spider-Verse #3
Edge of Spider-Verse #3 (2024) carries two significant firsts for the Spider-Verse's expanding tapestry. It marks the debut of Star-Spider — Persephone 'Percy' Parker of Earth-1978 — a science-fiction-inflected cosmic Spider-hero conceived by writer Justina Ireland and artist Pete Woods, adding a rare space-opera dimension to a mythology that had previously stayed mostly grounded in urban settings. Simultaneously, it serves as the second full story outing for Web-Weaver (Cooper Coen of Earth-71490), who had been introduced in 2022 as Marvel's first openly gay Spider-Man variant, giving that character deeper narrative roots and a new rogues' gallery chapter before both heroes were folded into the Spider Society crossover. The issue exemplifies the creative function of the Edge of Spider-Verse anthology format: a proving ground where wholly original takes on the Spider-Man concept are road-tested with distinct genres, identities, and tones before earning places in the wider multiverse.

The 2024 Edge of Spider-Verse series was announced by Marvel in January 2024 as a four-issue anthology structured to feed directly into the Spider Society miniseries, continuing an editorial tradition the franchise established when it first introduced Spider-Gwen in 2014. Issue #3, on sale April 11, 2024, paired two creative teams: Justina Ireland and Pete Woods, who designed Star-Spider from the ground up, with Ireland describing the character as 'an homage to everything I loved as a kid: sci-fi, awkward characters, and super heroes'; and Steve Foxe — co-creator of Web-Weaver alongside artist Kris Anka in 2022's Edge of Spider-Verse (Vol. 2) #5 — returning to continue Cooper Coen's story with art by Kei Zama. The cover for the main edition was by Chad Hardin, with variant covers including editions by Pete Woods and Marco Mastrazzo.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearance of Star-Spider (Persephone 'Percy' Parker, Earth-1978), created by writer Justina Ireland and artist Pete Woods; she is a quantum engineering apprentice living aboard the Space Station Bronx who uses a colony of spider-like nanobots — called S.P.I.D.E.R.s, built on Shi'ar technology — to form a suit of armor and operate as a space-faring hero.
- Star-Spider's civilian name, Persephone Parker, follows comics' alliterative naming tradition, and her home designation, Earth-1978, is her assigned Marvel multiverse universe number.
- Second story appearance of Web-Weaver (Cooper Coen, Earth-71490), written by his co-creator Steve Foxe (Web-Weaver's debut was in Edge of Spider-Verse Vol. 2 #5, 2022, written by Foxe with art by Kris Anka); Cooper Coen is Marvel's first openly gay Spider-Man variant.
- The Web-Weaver story in this issue features the first appearances of Earth-71490 variants of Rhino (Aleksei Sytsevich, in flashback) and Vulturion (Blackie Drago), establishing Web-Weaver's own rogues' gallery of familiar Spider-Man villain analogues.
- The Web-Weaver segment introduces a comedic romantic subplot: Cooper's friend Peter Parker unknowingly tries to set Cooper up with Web-Weaver — that is, with himself.
- Issue went on sale April 11, 2024; the main cover (Cover A) was by Chad Hardin, with variant covers by Pete Woods (including a 1:10 design variant) and Marco Mastrazzo (1:25 variant); a second printing was also issued.
- Both Star-Spider and Web-Weaver subsequently appeared in the Spider Society (2024) miniseries, validating the anthology's role as the on-ramp for new characters entering the broader Spider-Verse crossover continuity.
- The 2024 Edge of Spider-Verse series is the fourth volume to bear the anthology title, continuing a franchise that previously introduced characters such as Spider-Gwen and Spider-Rex, and laid groundwork for eras of Spider-Man India and Araña.
