About this Issue

Edge of Spider-Verse (2024) #2 marks the first full comic appearance of Spooky-Man, a darkly comedic supernatural Spider-Verse variant whose horror-tinged concept — a symbiote-adjacent demon that bonds with a dead high schooler — pushed the anthology's creative mandate into genuinely new genre territory. The issue also served as a long-overdue spotlight on Cyborg Spider-Man, a fan-favorite '90s costume concept that had languished in relative obscurity since the original 'Revenge of the Sinister Six' storyline. As the second chapter of Marvel's fourth Edge of Spider-Verse miniseries, it continued the anthology's established role as the primary launchpad for multiversal Spider-characters, a tradition stretching back to the original 2014 series that introduced Spider-Gwen.

History

The 2024 Edge of Spider-Verse miniseries was announced in October 2023 as a four-issue anthology building toward Marvel's next major Spider-Verse event, following prior installments of the same format that introduced characters such as Spider-Gwen, Spider-Rex, and Spider-Boy's origin secrets. Issue #2 was placed in the hands of two separate creative teams: writer-artist Kaare Andrews paired with penciller Bob Quinn for the Spooky-Man lead story, and writer Rich Douek with penciller Edgar Salazar for the Cyborg Spider-Man backup, all edited by Nick Lowe. The issue carried a FOC (Final Order Cutoff) date of February 26, 2024, and went on sale March 27, 2024, as the second of four installments in this run.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of Spooky-Man (a supernatural Spider-Verse variant who bonds with a dead high schooler named Gluemy Miller) and Gluemy Miller himself, both debuting in the lead story.
  • First appearance of the Spiderlings and several supporting characters from the 'Spider-High' setting, including the villain group called the Sinnerster Six — a faculty of supervillains at the school.
  • Spooky-Man lead story written by Kaare Andrews with art by Bob Quinn; the backup Cyborg Spider-Man story written by Rich Douek with art by Edgar Salazar.
  • The Spooky-Man character communicates exclusively in rhyming verse, a distinctive narrative device that sets him apart from other Spider-Verse variants.
  • Cyborg Spider-Man's return in the backup story marked his first significant solo spotlight since the character originated from the 1992 'Revenge of the Sinister Six' storyline in Spider-Man #21 by Erik Larsen, where Peter Parker was given a cybernetic arm cast by Care Labs scientist Oscar McDonnell.
  • The multiversal Cyborg Spider-Man (Earth-2818) — a fully robotic Peter Parker distinct from the 1992 costume — had previously appeared in Superior Spider-Man #33 (2014) during the Spider-Verse event; the 2024 backup placed a new Cyborg Spider-Man (Earth-9349) in the anthology.
  • Cover by Chad Hardin; the issue also shipped with multiple variant covers including one by Kaare Andrews, one by Salvador Larroca spotlighting Cyborg Spider-Man, and others by Mark Brooks and Pete Woods.
  • The issue is part of a four-issue miniseries explicitly positioned by Marvel editorial as groundwork for the next major Spider-Verse crossover event.
