History

The character originated as an idea by Roy Thomas, who co-plotted the debut story with his then-wife Jean Thomas; Gerry Conway scripted it, and Mike Ploog — making his first full-length comic book work — brought the visuals to life, also serving as his own inker. The series name 'Werewolf by Night' was suggested by Stan Lee, who edited the issue; Conway, years later, freely admitted he almost certainly did not consciously name the lead 'Jack Russell' after the terrier breed, describing it as most likely an unconscious choice. Because the issue landed during a brief window when Marvel was publishing enlarged 48-page issues at a 25-cent cover price — a format quickly abandoned — this debut story had unusually generous page real estate to develop its origin, something Conway later credited with helping establish the character's tone. The original interior artwork was subsequently stolen from Ploog, who has spent decades publicly seeking its return, recovering only the splash page; 27 of the 28 pages remained missing as of 2023.
