About this Issue

Marvel Spotlight #2 (cover-dated February 1972) delivered the first appearance and origin of Jack Russell, the Werewolf by Night — the opening shot of Marvel's Bronze Age horror revival and one of the most direct consequences of the Comics Code Authority's landmark 1971 rule revision that finally permitted werewolves, vampires, and ghouls to appear in code-approved comics. The issue established the template for Marvel's wave of supernatural antiheroes: a tragic family curse, a sympathetic teenage protagonist, and genuinely dark stakes, all of which set the character apart from the superhero mainstream and paved the way for Tomb of Dracula, Ghost Rider, and the rest of Marvel's horror pantheon. After a three-issue tryout arc, the character graduated to his own ongoing series, which itself became the launchpad for Moon Knight's debut in issue #32 — meaning this first chapter carries an outsized creative legacy far beyond the Werewolf concept alone.

History

The character originated as an idea by Roy Thomas, who co-plotted the debut story with his then-wife Jean Thomas; Gerry Conway scripted it, and Mike Ploog — making his first full-length comic book work — brought the visuals to life, also serving as his own inker. The series name 'Werewolf by Night' was suggested by Stan Lee, who edited the issue; Conway, years later, freely admitted he almost certainly did not consciously name the lead 'Jack Russell' after the terrier breed, describing it as most likely an unconscious choice. Because the issue landed during a brief window when Marvel was publishing enlarged 48-page issues at a 25-cent cover price — a format quickly abandoned — this debut story had unusually generous page real estate to develop its origin, something Conway later credited with helping establish the character's tone. The original interior artwork was subsequently stolen from Ploog, who has spent decades publicly seeking its return, recovering only the splash page; 27 of the 28 pages remained missing as of 2023.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance and full origin of Jack Russell / Werewolf by Night (Earth-616), the first code-approved werewolf lead character in Marvel Comics history.
  • First appearances of the entire Russell family circle introduced here: Lissa Russell (Jack's sister), Laura Russell (Jack's mother, who dies in the issue), Philip Russell (Jack's stepfather, positioned as an antagonist), and Gregory Russoff (Jack's biological father, appearing only in flashback, also dying in that backstory).
  • Creative team: plotted by Roy Thomas and Jean Thomas, scripted by Gerry Conway, penciled and inked by Mike Ploog; edited by Stan Lee, who also coined the title 'Werewolf by Night.'
  • The cover was penciled by Neal Adams and inked by Tom Palmer — neither of whom worked on the interior story.
  • The issue is a double-feature: the main Werewolf story ('Night of Full Moon — Night of Fear!') is backed by 'Where Gargoyles Dwell!', a reprint of a story originally published in Venus #16 (1951), written, penciled, inked, and lettered by Bill Everett; this backup features Venus and her associate Whit Hammond, both indexed for this issue.
  • The main story was partially reprinted in Power Records' 1974 Werewolf by Night book-and-record set, which used Ploog's original art.
  • 'Night of Full Moon — Night of Fear!' has been reprinted in Essential Werewolf by Night Vol. 1, the Werewolf by Night Omnibus (2015), Werewolf by Night: The Complete Collection Vol. 1 (2017), Marvel Masterworks: Werewolf by Night Vol. 1 (2022), and several international editions.
  • The character's debut was a direct creative response to the CCA's 1971 code revision that explicitly permitted supernatural creatures — including werewolves — when handled 'in the classic tradition' of high-calibre literary works.
