Doctor Strange #1
Doctor Strange #1 (1974) represents the character's first truly standalone ongoing series under his own name — the earlier 'Doctor Strange' volume had merely been Strange Tales renumbered from issue #169. More significantly, it marks the debut of Silver Dagger (Isaiah Curwen), a former Catholic Cardinal turned fanatical anti-mystic crusader who became one of Strange's most distinctive recurring foes, introducing a religiously motivated antagonist unlike anything else in the Bronze Age Marvel cosmos. The issue also opens an extended Alice in Wonderland-inflected storyline set inside the necromantic Orb of Agamotto, blending psychedelic imagery with literary allusion in a way that distinguished the Englehart/Brunner era as one of the most creatively ambitious in the character's history. In "Through an Orb Darkly," Doctor Strange is plunged into the mysterious Necromantic Orb of Agamotto after Silver Dagger strikes him down and steals the Eye of Agamotto and Clea. Written by Steve Englehart and Frank Brunner, with art by Frank Brunner and inks by Dick Giordano, this 1974 Marvel classic finds Strange confronting a surreal, dreamlike realm where he encounters a cryptic hookah-smoking caterpillar. Editor Roy Thomas had relaunched the character in Marvel Premiere beginning in 1972, but by his own account the feature stalled until he handed it to writer Steve Englehart and artist Frank Brunner, whose run in that anthology proved that Strange could be a sales success for the first time. That performance directly prompted Marvel to greenlight the new ongoing series, with Englehart and Brunner continuing seamlessly from where Marvel Premiere #14 left off. Roy Thomas served as editor on the debut issue, with Len Wein as Editor-in-Chief; the interior art was inked by Dick Giordano, colored by Glynis Wein (Oliver), and lettered by John Costanza — the same crew that had finished the Marvel Premiere stint. Brunner departed after only a handful of issues, and Gene Colan stepped in as penciler, but Englehart remained as writer through 1976.
