Doctor Strange hurls himself against a writhing, tentacled blue-and-purple creature while a burst of mystical energy crackles around him — his crimson Cloak of Levitation billowing dramatically as he shields a group of imperiled civilians huddled behind him, one of whom clutches a gun. Steve Leialoha's cover work gives the whole scene a kinetic, unsettling energy that blends supernatural dread with street-level tension. Roger Stern and Leialoha were crafting some genuinely compelling sorcery in 1984, and this October issue looks like a fine example of why this run held readers' attention.
