About this Issue

Doctor Strange #67 serves as the direct narrative bridge following the celebrated Montesi Formula arc (issues #59–62), in which Roger Stern had Strange use the Darkhold to permanently banish vampires from Earth-616. This issue tests the durability of that status quo by pitting Strange against a Darkholder cult still zealous enough to attempt reversing the spell even with Dracula himself destroyed — proving that the consequences of Strange's earlier gambit would generate story momentum for years to come. It simultaneously launches the Dark Dimension rebellion subplot by introducing Rahl and establishing Clea's clandestine role as a resistance leader against Umar, a thread that would pay off across the following years of the series. For collectors focused on Roger Stern's run, it is the essential connective tissue between his landmark vampire finale and the subsequent 'Into the Dark Dimension' epic.

History

Roger Stern had been the driving creative force behind Doctor Strange since the late 1970s, and #67 falls within the final phase of his tenure, published with an October 1984 cover date. Steve Leialoha, who had contributed artwork to earlier issues of the run, returned to handle both pencils and inks here after Paul Smith — who drew the two preceding issues (#65–66) — stepped away from the book. Bob Sharen colored and Rick Parker lettered the issue, rounding out the production team under editor-in-chief Jim Shooter. The issue balances two simultaneous plot engines — the vampire-cult threat on Earth and the nascent rebellion in the Dark Dimension — in a manner characteristic of Stern's multi-layered scripting style throughout his Doctor Strange tenure.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Cover date: October 1984 (Doctor Strange vol. 2, #67); on-sale date approximately July 1984.
  • Story title: 'Private Eyes,' written by Roger Stern with art and cover by Steve Leialoha (inks, pencils, and cover all by Leialoha).
  • First appearances of Rahl (a rebel sorcerer from the Dark Dimension allied with Clea), and Darkholder cult members Poplaski and Crowley.
  • The plot is a direct sequel to the Montesi Formula arc (issues #59–62): the issue dramatizes the Darkholders' failed attempt to undo Strange's spell that had purged all vampires from Earth-616.
  • Blade (Eric Brooks), Hannibal King, and Frank Drake — pre-Nightstalkers — all appear; their next post-Montesi-Formula team-up with Strange happens here.
  • The issue concurrently seeds the multi-part Dark Dimension rebellion storyline, showing Clea organizing resistance against Umar alongside Rahl.
  • Brief supporting appearances by Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman), the Shroud, Wong, and Sara Wolfe round out Stern's extended corner of the Marvel Universe.
  • The issue exists in Direct Edition, Newsstand, Canadian edition (with higher cover price), and a Mark Jeweler Advertisement Insert variant. It is collected in Doctor Strange Masterworks Vol. 10 (issues #58–73) but was not included in the earlier 'Dr. Strange vs. Dracula: The Montesi Formula' TPB (2006), which collected only #14 and #58–62.
