Doctor Fate #9
A man sits cross-legged and blindfolded at the center of a ritual circle, surrounded by small robed figures and golden helmets, while three looming supernatural faces — one turbaned and grey-skinned, one purple-hued, one pale — bear down from above in an atmosphere of genuine menace. Shawn McManus's cover for Doctor Fate #9 strikes a contemplative, unsettling mood that feels well-suited to a series always willing to push mysticism into strange territory. J. M. DeMatteis and McManus were doing quietly ambitious work on this title in 1989, and "Food for Thought" looks like no exception.
