Two crooks mid-heist — one smirking in a checked suit, the other older and grim with a rifle — are so confident that Batman is "nowhere around" that they're already urging each other to flee. What they haven't noticed is the Dark Knight bursting fist-first through a framed painting right behind them, shattering it in a burst of yellow energy in a wonderfully timed cover composition by Ross Andru and Dick Giordano. Detective Comics #516 from July 1982 sets up "Academy of Crime, Part Two: Final Exams!" with exactly the kind of dramatic irony that makes Batman stories so satisfying.
