Detective Comics #49 (vol. 2, 2016) is a representative high-water mark of the Jim Gordon-as-Batman era that ran through DC's New 52 continuity. As the second installment of the 'Bronze Age' story arc, it sharpens the central ethical question of that entire run: whether a career cop, accustomed to working within legal limits, can reconcile the extra-judicial freedom the Batman mantle provides. The issue also carries a variant cover by Neal Adams that creates a three-generation chain of visual homage — from Bob Kane's Detective Comics #31 (1939) through Adams's own Batman #227 (1970) to this 2016 cover — making it a self-contained essay in Batman iconography.

History

The issue arrived in the final months of Detective Comics vol. 2 before DC Rebirth ended the line in mid-2016. Writer Peter J. Tomasi and penciller Fernando Pasarin had taken over the Gordon-era title and were, by contemporary reviews, hitting their stride just as the run was winding down. The Neal Adams variant was part of a February 2016 DC-wide promotional push in which Adams produced homage covers across roughly 25 titles; for this issue Adams revisited his own Batman #227 cover, itself created at editor Julius Schwartz's request as an homage to Detective Comics #31, blending a gothic-romance visual mood with Batman imagery.

The issue was reprinted in the collected edition Detective Comics: Gordon at War, which gathered the final story arcs of the Gordon-Batman era.
