☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis collection brings together the one-shots and tie-in issues from DC's Dark Nights: Metal event, focusing on the twisted, alternate-reality versions of Batman known as the Dark Knights. Each story explores the origin and nature of a different evil Batman, such as the Red Death, the Murder Machine, and the Dawnbreaker, as they serve the dark god Barbatos. Written by various creators including Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV, and Sam Humphries, this volume expands the nightmare landscape of the Metal saga.
In "Ride the Lightning," a 2019 issue of Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights Rising, young Bruce Wayne on Earth -32—numb from his parents' death—finds himself chosen by the Green Lantern Corps, only to twist the ring’s power to lethal ends. Written by Sam Humphries and illustrated by Ethan Van Sciver, with colors by Jason Wright and letters by Tom Napolitano, the story follows Bruce as he becomes Batman the Dawnbreaker, drawn into a darker mission by the Batman Who Laughs. The cover, by Jason Fabok, captures the grim intensity of a world on the brink.
In "Ride the Lightning," the Batman of Earth -52, pushed to his limits by Gotham’s relentless crime, takes a dangerous leap by stealing the speed of the Earth -52 Flash. Renamed Batman the Red Death, he wields this newfound velocity to dismantle Gotham’s underworld—only to discover his world is on the brink of collapse. An agent of Barbatos offers him a chance to save his reality by traveling to Earth 0, where he’ll face off against The Flash in a clash that could reshape both worlds.
In *Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights Rising*, Batman on Earth -44, grief-stricken after Alfred’s death, turns to Cyborg to create the Alfred Protocol—a digital echo of his mentor. But when the program takes control, it eliminates Arkham’s villains and infects Bruce, transforming him into the Murder Machine. Now driven by a twisted sense of protection, the machine-like Batman journeys to Earth 0, setting him on a collision course with Cyborg—his former ally, now a key defender of the world.
In "Fear of the Dark," a version of Bruce Wayne from Earth -32—numb to emotion after his parents' death—wields a Green Lantern ring not with hope, but with cold, relentless will. As Batman the Dawnbreaker, he carves a path of destruction through the Corps and the Guardians, drawn to a darker purpose when his world faces annihilation. Recruited by the Batman Who Laughs, he journeys to Earth 0 to aid in its conquest, where he clashes with Hal Jordan in a battle that redefines what it means to be a hero—or a monster.
In "Rime of the Ancient Mariner," Bryce Wayne—Earth-11’s Batwoman, driven by grief and vengeance after the death of her lover Sylvester Kyle—transforms herself into a sea-born warrior to confront Aquawoman and Atlantis’s armies. Now wielding control over the oceans, she battles her way to Earth 0, where her crusade collides with Aquaman and Mera in the ruins of Amnesty Bay.
In "Wrath Child," the Batman of Earth -12, shattered by the death of his lover Wonder Woman during a final stand against Ares, dons the God of War’s helmet and embraces its fury. Channeling his grief into power, he answers the call of the Batman Who Laughs and journeys to Earth 0, where he sets his sights on unraveling a coalition of elite operatives—leaders from A.R.G.U.S., S.H.A.D.E., the D.E.O., and Task Force X—turning them against one another in a brutal test of wills.
In the shattered remnants of Earth -1, Batman—driven to madness by Superman’s descent into evil and the murder of Lois Lane—embraces the Doomsday virus to become the Devastator. Now a weapon of destruction, he answers the call of The Batman Who Laughs and journeys to Earth 0, tasked with stealing the cosmic tuning force from the Fortress of Solitude to aid Barbatos in unraveling reality itself.
In *Dark Nights: Metal: Dark Knights Rising*, on Earth -22, Batman’s long battle with the Joker reaches a brutal climax—only for the villain’s death to unleash a deadly virus that twists Batman’s mind. As the Dark Knight succumbs to madness, he turns on his world’s heroes, forging a reign of terror before answering Barbatos’s call to invade Earth 0 and expand the Dark Multiverse.
In "Riders on the Razor," Detective Chimp—once just a lab chimp named Bobo—rises from a forgotten past to become a key guide through the fractured realms of the Multiverse. Now working alongside Will Magnus, T.O. Morrow, and other brilliant minds, Bobo helps The Flash, Cyborg, and Raven navigate the Ultima Thule in a desperate race to reach the Hall of Heroes, as the Dark Knights close in to stop them.
