In 1978, Swedish publisher Carlsen/if [SE] launched a four-issue Conan series, adapting Robert E. Howard’s barbarian adventures for a new audience. The run featured scripts by Roy Thomas and Rolf Lindby, with dynamic artwork by Barry Smith (later Barry Windsor-Smith), whose detailed, expressive style defined the character’s early European comics presence. Though brief, this series stands as a key early translation of Howard’s Hyborian Age into sequential art, bridging American Marvel influences with a distinct Scandinavian publishing sensibility.
