In one story, Candy's father nearly discovers her secret plan to elope with Ted when a neighbor reveals the truth, but Ted is actually just fixing the family shutter, and the misunderstanding is resolved when a ladder accident strikes down Miss Tellall, the town gossip. In another story, Candy uses a personality-testing gadget at a carnival to win a date, then uses magic mirrors and other tricks to arrange multiple dates for herself and her friend Joe. A final story shows Candy juggling romantic complications when she promises dates to both Ted and Joe while also being set up by friends Cornelia and Golly with other suitors, leading to various romantic mix-ups involving library dates and last-minute substitutions.
When Jitters Jones finds a mysterious personality-testing gadget at Bugs's place, he gets the wild idea to use it to impress Pamela Prunelle—a glamorous deb who's way out of his league. After spotting her at Ed's Fizz Shoppe, Jitters hatches a scheme involving a radio contest for a new car, convinced that winning wheels will be the ultimate personality magnet. With Bugs's reluctant help, he enters the Fluffo Soap puzzle contest and waits for his big moment, convinced that a little ingenuity and charm can make all his romantic dreams come true.
