Written by Gaylord DuBois and illustrated by Russ Manning, these stories follow the African warriors Dan-El and Natongo as they battle poachers, colonial threats, and natural dangers while protecting their homeland. The volume also includes supplementary material on the feature's creation and legacy.
"Episode 86: 'Look! Our canoe--!'" delivers a gripping chapter in the Brothers of the Spear Archives, where the group faces a desperate climb up a sheer cliff while carrying a vital supply of food for their people. Written by Gaylord Du Bois and illustrated with dynamic precision by Russ Manning—whose inks and cover art both bear his unmistakable hand—the issue captures the tension and endurance at the heart of their journey.
In "Episode 89: 'You must leave us here O Dan-El, my Brother of the Spear!'", Dan-El and his companion Ingongi press on through the flooded jungle, racing against rising waters to reach M'tembo and seek help from the enigmatic Molithi. With Natongo and Zulena already en route to Tungeulu, Dan-El faces a desperate choice as the wilderness closes in.
In "[Episode 95] Dan-El and Natongo Meet Again," the paths of Dan-El and Natongo cross once more under dire circumstances, as Dan-El and Tavane arrive to find Natongo and Zulena trapped and surrounded by Ilolo’s forces. With the enemy closing in, Dan-El chooses to stand with them, while Tavane races toward Aba-Zulu to rally reinforcements.
In "[Episode 98] New Country and Friends," the brothers journey toward a small valley chosen as the new home for the Tengulus, only to face unexpected challenges when they encounter a rhinoceros and a band of gorillas along the way.
In "[Episode 106] The Truth Herb," the Aba-Zulu elder Gathongo uses a potent herbal concoction on a mysterious, hypnotic stranger, uncovering a startling revelation: the tall Tungelus prepare their own food. As the stranger tries to flee, he is swiftly intercepted by the watchful Tavane.
In "[Episode 107] The Duel," Dan-El confronts the tall strangers with the help of Zulena, using a truth serum to break their hypnotic control over Natongo, all under Dan-El’s firm command.
Jo and the Brothers of the Spear face a desperate climb up a sheer cliff, burdened by a heavy load of food for their people, as enemies close in below. With no room for retreat and every step a test of will, their survival hinges on what they’re willing to risk.
