About this Collection

This Modern Era Epic Collection opens Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's acclaimed run on Astonishing X-Men, collecting the first story arc, 'Gifted.' When the X-Men—Cyclops, Beast, Storm, Wolverine, and newcomer Armor—re-form the team with a public mission, they face a mysterious new mutant threat that challenges their place in a world that fears them. The volume sets the stage for a defining era of the team, blending character-driven drama with high-stakes superhero action.

"Ghost Box" marks a pivotal moment in the Astonishing X-Men series, as Warren Ellis and Simone Bianchi deliver a tense, atmospheric tale that deepens the team's mission in their new San Francisco base. With Storm arriving unexpectedly—her presence tied to Wakanda’s quiet support through Mutantes Sans Frontieres—the X-Men shift from street-level stealth to full superhero gear, drawn into a chilling mystery when a burned corpse with strange genetic markers and cryptic notes leads them to the derelict Chaparanga Beach, the graveyard of starships. Cover by Simone Bianchi and Andrea Silvestri captures the eerie, otherworldly tone of the story’s haunting beginning.

The X-Men are settling into their new as-yet-unnamed headquarters in San Francisco. Storm arrives, explaining that she convinced T'Challa to let her "scope out" the team's current methods as he is helping fund them through Mutantes Sans Frontieres because she was bored in Wakanda. She arrives in time to join the team, in new street clothes designed to help them avoid anti-superhero sentiment, as they answer a call from the San Francisco police to help with a mysterious burning body. The unusual genetic code of the corpse and the notebooks found with it that describe the next destination of its killer send the team, now switched to more traditional superhero gear, to Chaparanga Beach, the graveyard of starships.
